Band eterogenea che vuol porgere omaggio, più che un tributo, ai mitici David Crosby, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills e Neil Young, nasce dalle ceneri dei disciolti Southern Cross, che durante la prima decade degli anni 2000 ha partecipato a moltissime manifestazioni in tutta Italia.

 

Aggiornata la formazione con l’aggiunta di Claudio Zulian alle tastiere, Gianni Spezzamonte al basso e Leonardo Pascariello alla chitarra e voce, i membri fondatori Davide Pusiol, Giorgio Battello, Daniele Comand, Massimo Deana e Giulio Roselli sono ripartiti alla grande con questo splendido progetto nel 2012, suonando a Marghera Estate più volte, al Face Food Festival, al C.S.N.&Y. Day, al Vapore, al Bar Stella di Trieste e molti altri music club.

Fabio “Stevie” Ulliana

Fabio “Stevie” Ulliana, chitarrista, inizia a suonare nei primi anni ’80.

Fonda nel 1982 la “Iatitaia Blues Band”. Con tale band, in particolare, fa da spalla a gruppi di rilevanza nazionale - tra i quali Guido Toffoletti e la Blues Society, Model T. Boogie - ed internazionale, nel 1988 alla BLUES BROTHERS BAND. Partecipa a diversi festival, tra i quali PISTOIA BLUES FESTIVAL ’95, dove condivide il palco con Marc Lelangue, Rudy Rotta, Sonny Landreth, Robert Cray e B.B. King, VICENZA BLUES 2002, VICENZA BLUES 2003. Collabora e suona inoltre, nei vari anni, con diversi artisti e gruppi, tra gli altri Keith tha Missile Bailey (Gong – Here and Now). Ha al proprio attivo diversi lavori discografici (sia con la Iatitaia Blues Band che come solista) ed è insegnante di chitarra elettrica. Dal 2004 costituisce la Off Limits Band (vedi biografia). Nel marzo 2007 esce il primo cd come solista di Fabio Stevie Ulliana e della Off Limits Band; il titolo del Cd è "Off Limits".Sempre nel marzo 2007 Fabio Stevie Ulliana & Off Limits Band partecipano alla trasmissione televisiva a loro dedicata "MusiCafè" di Telefriuli. Nel maggio del 2016 viene chiamato per partecipare alla rassegna musicale  “Blues Pai Frus - Tributo a B.B. King” presso l’Auditorium Zanon di Udine.

 

Fabio “Stevie” Ulliana & Off Limits Band

Rock Blues Band e contaminazioni con altri stili e con diverse composizioni originali.

La band esegue il suo primo concerto nell’ottobre del 2003 (formazione Ulliana-Chiapolino-Morassutto) e partecipa in particolare al festival “VICENZA BLUES 2004”  mentre nell’aprile del 2005 viene selezionata per le fasi finali del BLUES'IN PISTOIA 2005. Suona  per tale rassegna al "Naima Club", famoso locale di Forlì prima della " The Big Brother & Holding Company" (la mitica band di Janis Joplin). Nel marzo del 2006 (formazione Ulliana-Chiapolino-Comuzzi) la “Fabio Stevie Ulliana & Off Limits Band” viene nuovamente selezionata per le fasi finali del BLUES'IN PISTOIA 2006. Nel marzo 2007 esce il primo cd come solista di Fabio Stevie Ulliana e della Off Limits Band; il titolo del Cd è "Off Limits".Sempre nel marzo 2007 Fabio Stevie Ulliana & Off Limits Band partecipano alla trasmissione televisiva a loro dedicata "MusiCafè" di Telefriuli. Dal 2008 il trio “Fabio Stevie Ulliana & Off Limits band”, assieme all’apporto musicale di Tony Longheu (voce, armonica a bocca) e Alberto Codiglia (tastiere), presenta in alcune occasioni lo spettacolo “Blues & Ballads” e dal 2009 lo spettacolo “Rock & Blues & Ballads” (repertorio dedicato in particolare ai classici del blues e alle ballate e tra questi diversi sono i brani scritti da Fabio Ulliana). Nel 2010, 2013, 2014 la band viene chiamata al BikerFest, festival internazionale che negli anni ha ospitato nomi illustri della storia della musica Rock ( tra i quali, Creedence Clearwater R, Status Quo, Uriah Heep, Dr. Feelgood, Alvin Lee, Whitesnake, Motörhead, Yardbirds, Animals, Canned Heat, Ten Years After).Dal 2014  la band presenta anche uno spettacolo in versione acustica (presentato anche al Casinò Perla di Nova Goriza – Slovenia). Nell’aprile 2017 esce, con tutti brani originali, il nuovo cd della band “Blues Explosion” (audio) (video) e nel maggio dello stesso anno la band partecipa al Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine alla rassegna musicale “Blues Pai Frus” (video1) (video2) .

HUNDRED SEVENTY SPLIT’ featuring Woodstock Legend and founding member of Ten Years After Leo Lyons with Joe Gooch and Damon Sawyer

‘Hundred Seventy Split’ is an exciting, high energy Blues/Rock power trio showcasing the combined talents of Joe Gooch on guitar/vocals, Leo Lyons on bass and Damon Sawyer on drums:

 

The band was formed in 2010 by bassist and ‘Woodstock Legend’ Leo Lyons who, along with Alvin Lee, is an original and founding member of the band ‘Ten Years After’.

 

Joe Gooch played with TYA for eleven years after Alvin Lee left the band. Leo and Joe initially formed a song-writing partnership to write for TYA and have continued writing together ever since. They both resigned from Ten Years After at the end of 2013.

 

The third band member is drummer Damon Sawyer, an in demand session musician and recording engineer, who has played with far too many people to mention.

 

Hundred Seventy Split’s debut record ’The World Won’t Stop’ was released in 2010.

 

A second CD simply titled, HSS was released in February 2014

 

The live double CD ‘The Road’, released in February 2015, reached #1 in the Amazon, Germany ‘New Blues CD charts’

 

CD number four ‘Tracks, is released on October 14th. New material from this record along with TYA classic songs and HSS favorites will be debuted in the live set on the upcoming November tour

 

‘Hundred Seventy Split’ was formed to play music that rocks outside of the TYA box with no compromise.

Leo Lyons

Leo Lyons born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in November 1943, Leo became a professional musician at the age of 16 and as a founding member of the band Ten Year After has been an on-stage eyewitness to some of the most pivotal moments in Rock and Roll history. In 1962 with his band The Jaybirds along with guitarist Alvin Lee he performed at The Star Club, Hamburg, Germany where only a week earlier The Beatles had polished up their act. Leo was hired to play in the club’s house band with Tony Sheridan and yet still found time to guest at the Top Ten Club with guitarist Albert Lee.

 

Like The Beatles, The Jaybirds returned home to England, made the move from their hometown to London and secured their first recording contract with legendary record producer Joe Meek. From 1963 to 1966, as well as playing and managing The Jaybirds, Leo worked as a session musician, toured as a sideman with pop acts of the day, appeared in a play in London’s West End and played a residency with poll winning British Jazz Guitarist Denny Wright.

 

In 1967 with a name change to Ten Years After, a residency at London’s famous Marquee Club and a debut album out on Deram Records, the band were soon to build up a huge following in Europe. Fillmore West and Fillmore East founder Bill Graham heard a copy of the band’s first album and immediately sent a letter offering to book Ten Years After into his historic venues in San Francisco and New York. They were also one of the first rock groups to be part of the Newport Jazz Festival. At Newport and on tour TYA performed with Nina Simone, Roland Kirk, Miles Davis and other jazz legends barnstorming across the US.

 

In August of the same year their now legendary encore “ I’m Goin’ Home” was captured on film at The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival, exposing their jazz blues rock amalgam to an even larger audience of movie goers who were blown away by the intensity of the band’s performance when the academy award winning documentary was released. Their ten-minute appearance in the film is an acknowledged highlight and established Ten Years After a place in rock history. The band’s albums are still available and all have reached Gold or Platinum status.

 

 

Joe Gooch

Joe Gooch is familiar to most from his work over the last seven years with rock legends Ten Years After. Having toured the world and recorded four albums with the highly respected rock veterans, Joe has now embarked on a new collaboration with bass player/writer Leo Lyons. Hundred Seventy Split is an exciting high energy blues/rock extravaganza that showcases Gooch and Lyons in their most exciting incarnation to date.

 

Joe grew up in a musical environment due to his parents being keen jazz, blues and classical music fans. The sound track to his early years was made up of artists and composers such as Stephan Grappeli, Django Rhineheart, Robert Johnson, Debussi, Steely Dan and John Mayall.

 

By thirteen, taking his music seriously, he enrolled on a course of classical guitar lessons. The disciplines he learnt were a good grounding for him, but he soon realized his interest lay outside of the classical sphere and moved towards other styles including rock and blues. At first, influenced by his childhood heroes, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy and later Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci and Larry Carlton amongst others, Joe experimented with various musical styles, and was constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration to expand and improve his techniques.

 

He strives relentlessly to be a better player and to express himself with an individual voice. Joe can communicate his emotions through strong, energetic playing, and gives a sensational dynamic to his new outfit Hundred Seventy Split.

 

Joe and Leo both resigned from Ten Years After at the end of 2013 and to celebrate a new beginning Hundred Seventy Split are releasing in February a new CD, simply titled, HSS.

 

 

Damon Sawyer

Hundred Seventy Split drummer Damon Sawyer must be one of the busiest guys on the music scene.

 

His career started at the age of 11 by taking lessons from jazz players Alan Ganley, Bill Castle and Asia’s Trevor Thornton. From the age of 13 he was already gigging and at the age of 18 was working with many bands including pit-work with touring musical shows - West Side Story for one - and playing with The Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra alongside Ben Castle and Don Weller.

 

The year 2000 was spent mostly in Brazil, where he hired a recording studio and session players to complete his first solo album “Struttin’ South” inspired by his love of blues, funk and Latin.

 

Having run a very successful drum school based in at South Hill Park Arts Centre, where he taught all styles from rock and funk to jazz and Latin, Damon moved into recording and production and now operates his own state-of-the-art recording studio in Hurst, Berkshire.

 

Between his schedule of teaching, recording, and working with HSS, Damon has found time to guest with numerous blues namesm such as Sonny Black's Blues Band, and with Chicago blues acts Dave Spector, Detra Farr, Jimmy Dawkins and Mojo Buford from Muddy Waters' band.

 

He has also appeared with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings for Atlantic Records, Soul Review at the O2, and the Led Zep reunion gig backing Paul Rodgers, Sam Moore and others.

Gli Atomic Rooster nascono nel 1969 su iniziativa di Vincent Crane e Carl Palmer, che già suonavano insieme nei Crazy World di Arthur Brown. A Crane, tastierista e Palmer, batterista, si aggrega il bassista Nick Graham. Così assestato, il trio incide il suo primo disco, che porta come titolo il loro stesso nome, e che la critica considera il loro miglior lavoro. La musica è riconducibile a un certo rock duro con risvolti mistici ed occulti, secondo uno dei modelli tipici del periodo e tentato con maggior fortuna anche dai contemporanei Black Sabbath[1]. Subito dopo l'incisione, a breve distanza l'uno dall'altro Graham e Palmer se ne vanno. Palmer raggiungerà Keith Emerson e Greg Lake per dare vita ad uno dei più famosi gruppi di rock progressivo degli anni settanta. Graham entrerà negli Skin Alley.

 

Crane raduna attorno a sé altri musicisti e prosegue azzeccando nel 1971 un paio di brani che oltre ad accrescere la fama del gruppo, dà loro un certo riscontro commerciale. Dura poco, però. I dischi che seguono non si discostano molto dalla sufficienza; ma le difficoltà sono soprattutto di carattere personale, a causa dei disturbi caratteriali di Crane che lo portano a cambiare in continuazione i musicisti attorno a sé. In tal modo non si crea il necessario affiatamento e la qualità del gruppo scade sempre più. Il chitarrista Steve Bolton lasciò il gruppo alla fine del 1972, e fu sostituito da John Goodsall (in seguito suonerà con i Brand X) che assunse lo pseudonimo di Johnny Mandala. Nel 1973 produssero l'album Nice 'n' Greasy nel quale era presente il singolo "Save Me", una rivisitazione in stile funk del brano "Friday the 13th". Dopo circa due anni che non venivano prodotte canzoni, la Drawn Records cessò i rapporti con la band a gli Atomic Rooster cominciarono a sciogliersi. Dopo un tour, Farlowe, Mandala e Parnell uscirono dal gruppo. Il singolo "Tell Your Story, Sing Your Song", uscì nel 1974 a nome di "Vincent Crane's Atomic Rooster" per Decca. Per di più nel 1975, durante una tournée degli Atomic Rooster in Italia, Crane si defila con la cassa, piantando in asso gli altri. Tra i musicisti rimasti a piedi si trova Rick Parnell, batterista, che deciderà di conseguenza di fermarsi in Italia e finirà per suonare prima con i Nova e poi coi New Trolls. Per il resto degli anni settanta Crane inciderà altri album, sempre a nome Atomic Rooster, senza più suscitare interesse. Tra i musicisti che hanno ruotato nel gruppo vanno ricordati Ginger Baker (batterista, ex Cream) e Chris Farlowe, cantante che raggiungerà una certa fama collaborando con altri musicisti celebri (notevoli soprattutto le sue prestazioni nei Colosseum).

CAMBRIDGE ROCK FESTIVAL REVIEW

Much conversation and anticipation was focused on a certain reunion at

this year's Cambridge Rock Festival with none other than prog rock

legends Atomic Rooster scheduled to take to the main stage on the second

day.

Rooster were one of the seminal British prog rock bands of the 70s with

much of their success, appeal and writing being attributed to Hammond

Organ maestro Vincent Crane. Originally playing with The Crazy World

Of Arthur Brown on huge hit 'Fire' with Carl Palmer, Vincent would soon

leave Brown and put together Rooster.

The band had 18 subsequent line-up changes and Crane was the only

constant member so his sad passing in 1989 basically marked the end of

the band... or did it?

Opening with Sleeping For Years, Pete French sounded amazing from the

start. One song in to Atomic Rooster's set and it was hard to imagine a

better vocalist all weekend.

Tomorrow Night set off the psychedelic dancing brigade, which only

added to the fantastic atmosphere. This was a special show from a special

band.

It's no secret that Steve Bolton is a master axeman and he led the band

through a stunning version of Black Snake before unleashing

an instrumental in honour of Vincent Crane. Save Me and Devil's

Answer proved to be the perfect crowd-pleasers but what could possibly

top these classic songs so early in the set?

The answer was bullish versions of Decision Indecision and VUG before

the iconic Death Walks Behind You. The evening was moving on at

lightning speed and the party had already built up to a crescendo for most

of the Proggers present.

But the Rooster were far from finished: Head In The Sky and Break The

Ice maintained the pace and proved Prog is not for the faint hearted.

Of course there was the familiar complaint that none of the band's original

members were on stage. So what? Two of them were there when the

Rooster were at their 70s peak and only the absence of Crane threatens to

stretch the current line-up's credibility. Crane aside, this is the real deal.

The real Rooster.

The greatest hits set ended with The Price and Breakthrough sparking

calls for more. It's easy to overlook a band that hasn't put out a studio

album since 1983 but on this form every rock fan should revisit the

Rooster.

With the blessing of Vincent's widow Jean, vocalist French and guitarist

Bolton were approached by Peter Barton and Gary Marks of Rock Artist

Management to put the band back together, a daunting task without Crane

himself present and with a very small pool of players out there on the

scene in the classical/R&B style, finding a replacement looked almost

impossible, however, along with the addition of a bassist and new

drummer to the line-up, the impossible has been achieved.

Alongside French and Bolton are new boys Bo Walsh on drums, Shug

Millige on bass duties (a first since 1983) and Hammond organ player

Christian Madden whose work with Steve Cropper, The Animals and

psychedelic band The Earlies is of note.

With this being Rooster's first reformation and festival performance in

over 35-years and French and Bolton's first time onstage doing Rooster

songs in 45-years, this was certainly set to be an interesting and provoking

performance.

Opening with the ironically titled 'Sleeping For Years', and the blazing

sound of the Crumar Mojo (Hammond clone) blazed through the PA to the

capacity crowd's approval. Setting the pace for the evening, the boys

quickly locked into each others groove.

With only two performances together and three rehearsals this was

playing on the wire at its finest. With intricate time signature changes,

runs, stops and neo classical solos, Madden had his work cut out for him

on organ. Along with comping piano with his left hand, the focus from

him was a wonder to watch.

Pete French, the elder statesman and consummate professional that he is,

engaged with the audience and dryly informed them of the history of the

band whilst Bolton chipped in humourously with anecdotes about the past.

There was a feeling of wonderment and incredible excitement actually

hearing these songs live and to be witness to this felt special. Songs such

as 'Death Walks Behind You' and 'Tomorrow Night' still have the same

appeal and relevance as they did over 40-years ago and French and Bolton

still effortlessly carry them off and with the new recruits onboard we are

seeing Rooster at a very high level musically.

Bo Walsh later spoke of how he remembers the artwork from the Rooster

albums and the impact hearing the songs for the first time had while

Madden, a self obsessed prog junkie whose influences extend from his

favourite band Gentle Giant, Curved Air and ELP to the jazz fusion greats

such as Chick Corea and more recently Cory Henry expressed his undying

love for Rooster and how pleased he is to have the gig.

French and Bolton have brought back to life an amazing back catalogue of

music. Standout tracks tonight included 'Tomorrow Night', 'Black Snake',

'Save Me', 'Devil's Answer', 'Death Walks Behind You' and

'Breakthrough'.

With talk of further dates and a new album, Atomic Rooster could well be

around for a while and judging by their gut bursting, fist pumping

performance at Cambridge Rock, so they should be.
